Abstract This study examined the relationship between intrinsic motivation, self-efficacy expectancy, peer pressure and academic performance of public school students in Oshimili North Local Government Area (ONLGA) of Delta State. A thirty item Likert scale questionnaire with a reliability coefficient of 0.69 was administered to thirty five students each from six public schools in total. Two hundred and ten questionnaires were collected by the researcher. Three research questions were raised which gave rise to three hypotheses formulated for the study. The hypotheses were statistically analysed using the Pearson product-moment correlation method at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that to a high degree of significance there is a relationship between intrinsic motivation and academic performance of students; a student that is self-motivated to produce academic excellence does better academically than a student that is not selfmotivated towards academic achievement. There is a significant relationship between self-efficacy expectancy of students and academic performance; students that believe in themselves, their ability and capability perform better academically than students that do not believe in themselves. This study also revealed that peer pressure influences the academic performance of secondary school students in ONLGA of Delta state. The study recommended that teacher training programmes should incorporate innovative techniques in training the student teacher on how to psychologically stimulate students towards being self-motivated, believing in themselves and also not allowing the influence of peers hinder their academic performance

Abstract T 2 This study is a cross-sectional survey examining alcohol availability and accessibility in some selected universities in Southern Nigeria and its impact on alcohol use. One thousand four hundred and ninety eight hundred students (n=1498) were purposively selected from different spots on the various campuses. Availability and accessibility were measured using the number of alcohol sales outlets within and around the campuses and the freedom students have in accessing alcohol. The alcohol use of students was measured using World Health Organization's Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). 1 The results showed that 792 (52.8%) of the respondents indicated easy access to alcohol while the AUDIT result indicated that 53.3% of the students are high risk drinkers. It is recommended that the government should ban alcohol sale outlets operating close to academic communities and outlets in operation before the establishment ofa university should be restricted in the sales of alcohol to students. Counsellors should organise more awareness programmes on the negative impact of alcohol abuse

Abstract Nigeria is presently bedeviled by high rate of violence, kidnapping, murders, terrorism and unemployment. Many of these evils are perpetrated mostly by young people who blame their criminal behavior on unemployment. This paper therefore, looks at the role of counselling in stemming the tide of violence through the teaching of conflict and anger management in schools. It also explores the practical ways counselling can aid Vocational/Career/Entrepreneurial decision particularly with the introduction of entrepreneurship into the Senior Secondary School curricula. It is believed that when young people can manage conflicts and are gainfully employed (not necessary white collar jobs) the rate of violence will reduce drastically and peace will be entrenched in the society. It was recommended therefore, that counsellors should be retrained on current market trends/ job opportunities, conflict management skills, etc. They should also be allowed and equipped adequately to practice counselling as it is done in developed countries.

Abstract Early behavioural problems in children may place them at risk of alcohol abuse in later life. The study investigated the association between childhood conduct problem and alcohol abuse of students in tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The data for this cross sectional study was collected from a randomly selected sample of seven hundred and fifty-three (753) tertiary institution students in Nigeria. Questionnaire for Students in Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria adapted from Loza (2006) Self Appraisal Questionnaire (SAQ) was used for data collection. The results showed significant influence of childhood conduct problem in the likelihood of the abuse of alcohol ( 2=2.189, Wald of 2 0=102.155, and p=0.000). However gender and age do not play significant roles in determining the Alcohol use of students. It is recommended that early careful assessment and treatment of children with conduct problem may be valuable for future prevention of alcohol abuse.

Abstract Mental health problems are becoming a major concern among Nigerian secondary school students, hence the need for relevant and dependable metrics for evaluating these problems. The psychometric qualities of the DASS-21 scale must be assessed in this population to ensure its utility. The study validated the scale's dimensionality, item fit, suitability of answer categories, and reliability using Rasch Model. Participants included 950 secondary school students from different schools across the three senatorial districts of Delta State, Nigeria. The scale showed a single dimension (unidimensionality), indicating that the items are moderately difficult and appropriate for the target population. The scale is sensitive to differences in emotional distress levels among respondents. Also, the person reliability value wass 0.806 and the item reliability value wass 0.9315, indicating that the Rasch model reliably measured the latent trait of interest in the amongst of secondary school students in Nigeria. The study recommended that the DASS-21 scale can be used as a valid tool for the assessment of mental health problems in secondary school students in Nigeria.

Abstract This theoretical essay explores the relationship between sleep habits and memory consolidation, advising on improving memory before tests. Understanding the connection between sleep and memory is crucial, as academic achievement relies on the ability to retain information. The study examines various sleep phases, emphasizing the functions of REM and NREM sleep in memory processing. It also examines declarative and procedural memory consolidations while sleeping, emphasizing the significance of different sleep phases for memory preservation. The relationship between sleep quality and test performance is demonstrated through empirical research on sleep and memory consolidation. The harmful effects of lack of sleep on memory recall emphasize the need for quick counselling interventions to help students with memory-related issues before tests. Counselling treatments include relaxation exercises, sleep hygiene instruction, and cognitive-behavioral therapies. Sleep hygiene instruction aims to establish reliable sleep routines and create a sleep-friendly atmosphere. Cognitivebehavioural therapies focus on sleep disorders and unfavourable views about memory and sleep. Memory improvement therapy emphasizes ethical issues and client autonomy. Case studies demonstrate how counselling techniques can be used in realworld settings to help students struggling with sleep or memory. Future research should examine individual variations in the link between sleep and memory and assess the efficiency of long-term counselling. Counsellors can play a key role in boosting academic performance and well-being by prioritizing sleep education and adopting evidence-based treatments. Further study in this area is expected to unlock the full potential of sleep as a crucial element in cognitive function and academic achievement.

Abstract Abstract: Driving under the influence of alcohol has been identified in past studies and reports as the major cause of road accidents and other public health issues. Commercial cyclists (popularly known as okada riders in Nigeria) pose a great danger to the public in most part of Nigeria because of their reckless riding behaviours. This study therefore examined the prevalence and problems of drinking among okada riders in Delta State, Nigeria. It is a cross sectional study of 250 okada riders across Delta State. Two sets of scales were used to collect data from the various parks. The AUDIT scale was used to establish the prevalence of alcohol drinking while the second scale teased out the problems associated with drinking. The results showed the prevalence of drinking, their perception about the problems associated with drinking and the number of accidents they have had in the past. The regression analysis showed drinking prevalence and occurrence of accidents and other public health concerns... It was therefore recommended that the drinking-driving policy in Nigeria should be strengthened as the advocacy on harm reduction is gaining global concern

Abstract There is a high level of unemployment amongst National Youth Service Corpsdischarged graduates of universities and polytechnics in Nigeria, especially in Delta State. This necessitated guiding these graduates to take to low-skill, lowpaying jobs, as an alternative to redundancy and the attendant indulgence in anti-social behavior. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between vocational interest, skills possessed and vocational guidance techniques, and unemployed graduates’ readiness to enter into lowskill occupations. A research hypothesis was formulated for the correlational design study. Three instruments: the Modified Bakare Vocational Interest inventory (MB VII), the vocational skills possessed inventory (VSPI), and the vocational guidance techniques (counseling) were used. The study population comprised of all unemployed NYSC-discharged graduates in Delta State. Purposive sampling was used to select two Local Government Areas (LGA’s) from each of the three Senatorial Districts of Delta State (Six LGA’s). Random sampling was used to obtain two hundred and forty respondents from the six LGAs. Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis. Results indicated that vocational interest, skills possessed and counseling had significant relationships with unemployed graduate's readiness to enter lowskill occupations. They were all predictors of entry into low-skill jobs except counseling. It was recommended that skill training, counseling and identification of vocational interests should be intensified to reduce unemployment amongst graduates.

Abstract Unemployment amongst tertiary education graduates in Nigeria is very high and continues to rise, with more graduates being churned out annually. Alarming statistics are released daily about Nigerian youths dying while crossing the Sahara Desert, drowning in the Mediterranean Sea, being maimed or sold In Libyan slave markets or being forcefully deported in their thousands. Over 75% graduates of tertiary institutions in Nigeria are adjudged unemployable. To stem this social malaise, institutions are using vocational guidance and entrepreneurship education to re-orientate graduates to acquire vocational skills for self-reliance. Presently, graduates are engaging in N-power training programmes, vocational training in technical colleges, YAGEP, STEP and skill acquisition under thriving entrepreneurs. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between graduate unemployment vocational guidance and entrepreneurship education, and participation in post-graduation vocational training by graduates in Delta State. This correlational study used a survey design to obtain data from respondents. Three research hypotheses were raised. Study population comprised of unemployed graduates undergoing vocational training. The instrument used was the unemployment, Vocational Guidance and Entrepreneurship Education Assessment Inventory Questionnaire (INGEEAIQ), a unipolar Likert scale with 40 question items. Findings revealed that all three hypotheses were retained, because the three independent variables could not predict the outcome variables (p>0.05). Recommendation was that other factors should be investigated to determine graduates' decision to engage in vocational training for self-reliance.

Abstract Educational research in tertiary institutions in Delta State, Nigeria, like in some other parts in the world, is hindered by high cost of internet bandwidth and unreliable services of major telecommunications companies, in most areas of the state. A survey was carried out across tertiary institutions in Delta State, which involved researchers in trying to identify challenges associated with internet access for educational research. Problems identified by researchers include poor internet connectivity, quick time-out of access, inconvenience in using hand-held device, absence of wifi device, non-availability of functional e-libraries, irregular power supply, remoteness from telecommunication masts, non-availability of cabled direct access to internet (bandwidth), and clogging of internet super-highway by social media users. This paper provided a sustainable solution to the problems of e-research by designing an implementable, affordable, logistic-oriented, terrain- based infrastructure for enhanced internet connectivity to ease educational research in tertiary institutions.
