Abstract Existing literature has shown that violence against women (VAW) is still common in Africa. Harmful traditional cultural norms have contributed to VAW. The identification and the awareness of the negative effect of these socio-cultural norms (SCN) will reduce VAW in Nigeria. This work looks at the socio-cultural norms (SCN) that lead to violence against rural and sub-urban Nigerian women. A mixed research approach involving 400 people from Ikaland of different age levels, marital status, and educational attainment was adopted. More than 75% of the respondents agreed that blaming the wife for her husband’s angry outburst, not prospering, and his mysterious death are the leading promoters of VAW. Others are; that a woman is not accorded respect if she is not married, and it is not proper for a wife to deed any landed property in her name. Participants suggested that schools could minimise these SCN by using the teaching-learning process, mass media, and professional academic associations to carry out public campaigns. This investigation adds to the current body of information on SCN that promote VAW in the various ethnic groups and provides ways the schools can contribute to combating these norms. Educational stakeholders should implement the recommended school ways of eliminating these identified socio-cultural norms.

Abstract The difterential item functioning (DIF) of the mathematics test for senior secondary (MTSS) was investigated in this study. The analytical descriptive survey research is the design employed for this study. Senior secondary three from Edo and Delta (SS3) students states in Nigeria were included in the sampling was used study. Stratified random to choose a and sample of 1850 students. Four research questions one hypothesis directed the investigation. The be valid and instrument MTSS was found to reliable. The DIF items were identified using a three-parameter model The hypothesis was tested using a of chi-square test of goodness of fit at the.05 level significance. The findings reveal based on that, of the 30 items that functioned differently location, 16 and 14 favour urban and rural students, MTSS also revealed no respectively. The statistically significant variation in the number of DiF questions Curve flagged based on urban and rural examinees. The Item Characteristics DIF, (ICC) showed that 12 and 18 of the DIF items were uniform and non-uniform respectively. Also, the ICC revealed that DIF was more common among the high ability examinees. Based on the findings of this study, DIF items should be identified while doing item analysis for test instruments. Following the goal of the test instrument, these DIF components can be eliminated, rewritten, or left in their current form.

Abstract The IRT software are now available but are not accessible to all those that needs it in Nigeria. Even when they are available, the ability to use them for data analysis is slim. This is a challenge that demand finding out if there are other methods of DIF detection that can comparatively detect the same item like the item response theory (IRT) methods. This study focused on comparing the index of differential item functioning umder the The assessment of differential item functioning in measurement instruments is of much concern to educational measurement. Educational instruments may operate differently for individuals from different subgroups not because of differences in their ability level but because of differences in the subgroup they belong to (Sadeghi & Khonbi, 2017; Steinmayr, methods of difference in difficulty index (p-value Bergold, Margraf-Stiksrud & Freund, 2015). It difference), chi-square (mantel-Haenszel), and IRT (Rasch model). The designfor the study was ex-post facto design. Stratified random sampling approach was used to select 1900 students from the 65,961 senior secondary three students in public schools in Edo and Delta states in Nigeria. The mathematics objective test was the instruments used in this study. The reliability value of the instrument was 0.70 using the test-retest technique. The results showed that there was significant agreement between the indexes of DIF for gender under the methods of Rasch Vs. Mantel-Haenszel but the agreements between the index of DIF for gender under the methods ofp-value difference Vs. Mantel-Haenszel and Rasch Vs. p-value difference were not significant. The IRT method was more reliable but the chi-square method compared favourably with it. It was then recommended that measurement is important to identify these items because such items may lead to unfair result when such groups are compared. Items that behave that way show differential item functioning (DIF). Differential item functioning items is capable of affecting the construct validity of an instrument (Chanpleng, Lawthong and Ngudgratoke, 2015). Differential item functioning occurs when individuals with the same probability of getting an item correct are performing differently because they belong to a different subgroup. There are several methods of detecting DIF items in measurement instruments. The various methods includes methods that are based on test differences in item difficulty (P-value differences, transformed item dificulty, standardization); differences in item discrimination (Point-biserial, a-value differences); chi-square (Mantel-Haenszel, logistic regression, Scheuneman, Cochran's chi-square); and the item response theory (IRIlikelihood ratio test, two-parameter logistic IRI model, Rasch model, three-parameter logistic IRT model) (Abedalaziz, 2010a; Lambert, Pallent and Girgis, 2010). Whether each of these methods will detect the same items as Dir experts should make use of the differential item functioning detection methods based on item response theory but where they are not readily available, the chi-square methods can be used.

Abstract There is an inequality in developed and developing countries’ research output in highly reputable databases. One way to reduce this inequality is to encourage researchers in developing countries to use online digital tools. This article examines the contribution of lecturers’ awareness and knowledge to utilising the free online digital tools (FODT) available for literature review in the field of education. A correlation research approach involving 180 academic staff in tertiary institutions in southern Nigeria was adopted, using descriptive statistics and regression analysis. A structured questionnaire elicited the participants’ awareness, knowledge, and utilisation of the free online digital tools available for literature review. The findings indicate a low level of awareness, knowledge, and utilisation of the FODT. The two regression models revealed that the lecturers’ level of awareness and knowledge accounted for significant contributions to the level of the lecturers’ utilisation of the FODT. These results demonstrate a link between lecturers’ level of awareness and knowledge to their utilisation of the FODT. It was recommended that stakeholders in research and education create awareness of the availability of these FODTs, carry out workshops on how to use them and replicate this study in other developing countries

Abstract It is becoming widely known or established that classical test theory differ from item response theory and that the later seems to be superior to the former. To what extent is this new development true is the crux of this study. The study focused on finding out the level of agreement of item parameters between classical test theory and item response theory. Six research questions and two hypotheses were raised, answered, and tested at .05 level of significance. The research design adopted was an expo-factor type. The population for this study consisted of SS3 students from public schools in Delta and Edo states. A stratified proportional random sampling technique was used to select students. A total of 1900 students formed the sampled size. The researchers used a developed mathematics achievement test comprises of 50 items; it was based on West Africa examination council syllabus on mathematics. The validity of the instrument was ascertained, the test retest method of establishing reliability was used, and it yielded .70 coefficient. The two hypotheses tested were accepted which implied that there is a significant agreement between the item parameters under classical test theory and item response theory. It was concluded that though the two theories may differ theoretically, they could yield similar results empirically. One of the recommendations put forward was that both of them should be used side by side when carrying out research that involves identification of item parameters of measurement instruments.

Abstract The study aimed at analyzing the psychometric properties of a Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) using Rasch Model. Seven research questions were formulated to guide the study. The study was an instrumentation research design which adopted the proportionate stratified random sampling approach to select 1453 senior secondary three (SS111) students from public schools in Delta State. The instrument MAT consists of 50 items. Experts in mathematics validated the instrument. The WINSTEPS software was used for the item analysis. The results showed that MAT fits the Rasch model and the unidimensionality assumption was met; and 46 items out of the 50 items have both construct and content validity and the difficulty indices ranging from -1.41 to 1.17 suggested that the MAT to an extent covers a wide spectrum of the ability of senior school mathematics students. Two items were found very difficult. The results also, showed that the examinees ability ranged between -4.03 to 2.88 suggesting that the examinees ability covers a wide range; there are some items well above the level of the examinees and there is need for additional items in the instrument to address these gaps. The distractors of the MAT were found to be appropriately used. It was recommended that since Rasch Model has capacity to resolve some basic issues in measurement, it should be used to carry out item analysis.

Abstract Psychometricians are interested in making sure that educational measuring instruments are good. This implies whether the items in the instruments are reliable and valid as well as free from bias. A test that has many items that flag differential item functioning (DIF) will not be free from bias which will in turn affect the validity of the test. The lack of proper detection of DIF in test items is a lapse that needs to be corrected. There are several methods of detecting DIF. Due to the inherent characteristics, advantages and imitations of these methods, the need to provide a theoretical comparison of these methods becomes relevant. This paper attempts to highlight the meaning and description of DIF, the general procedures for detecting DIF, and the advantages and limitations of some DIF procedures. It further gave guidelines on selection of DIF procedure to use. It was recommended that educationists should make use of the procedures whose software's are available for now. However, effort should be made by all concerned bodies to make available the software of those procedures that are based on item response theory since they seems to detect DIF more effectively.

Abstract 21st-century education requires precision in educational data for sound policy and the decision about children or students. It is necessary to minimise strife, increase inclusive education, access equal educational opportunity, etc. This has the potency to reduce terrorism, poverty and thus achieve the goals of Millennium development. All these demand that leaners should. come from diverse background, and it calls for test items that will measure precisely the amount of traits that is possessed by an individual. Differential item functioning detection techniques has the capacity of identifying test items, which has the tendency to measure ability outside the subject matter ability for test items that are used in a plural society like Nigeria. Several methods can be used to detect DIF in a test. Some of these methods are based on classical test theory (CTT) while others are based on item response theory (IRT). Whether these DIF methods can detect the same test items as DIF is of much concern to measurement and evaluation experts. The main purpose of this study is to compare the index of DIF under the methods of transformed item difficulty (TID) and 3-Parameter model (IRT) for candidates with the same mathematics ability. Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. A proportionate stratified random sampling approach was used to select 1900 students (1008 male and 892 female) from public schools in Delta and Edo states. The instrument for the study was 2012 WASSCE multiple choice -test consisting of 50 items with a reliability value of O.70. The SPSS, Microsoft Excel and BLOG-MG software were used to carry out the analysis. The result showed that there is no significant agreement between the precise index of DIF for gender under the methods of IRT (3-Parameter model) and CTT (transformed item difficulty) for items in mathematics achievement test. IRT is model based and has strong assumptions that make it more superior to CTT though it is more expensive to use. Since the DIF detection methods could not agree on the items detected as DIF. It was, therefore, recommended that test writers should make use of the DIF detection methods based on IRT to achieve high precision.

Abstract Mental health problems are becoming a major concern among Nigerian secondary school students, hence the need for relevant and dependable metrics for evaluating these problems. The psychometric qualities of the DASS-21 scale must be assessed in this population to ensure its utility. The study validated the scale's dimensionality, item fit, suitability of answer categories, and reliability using Rasch Model. Participants included 950 secondary school students from different schools across the three senatorial districts of Delta State, Nigeria. The scale showed a single dimension (unidimensionality), indicating that the items are moderately difficult and appropriate for the target population. The scale is sensitive to differences in emotional distress levels among respondents. Also, the person reliability value wass 0.806 and the item reliability value wass 0.9315, indicating that the Rasch model reliably measured the latent trait of interest in the amongst of secondary school students in Nigeria. The study recommended that the DASS-21 scale can be used as a valid tool for the assessment of mental health problems in secondary school students in Nigeria.

Abstract Despite the outstanding benefits of education to the individual and society, some students in Nigeria are saying education/schooling is a scam. No study has been undertaken to determine why students say education/school is a scam. This study aims to provide empirical evidence on the meaning of the slogan ‘education/school is a scam’, why the students are using the slogan and the way out. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from students in public schools/institutions in two states in Nigeria. The findings show that the slogan means that uneducated people are doing better financially, and many graduates are unemployed. They also show that the students are unsatisfied with the Nigerian educational system. Poor societal values, unemployment, and poor curriculum were reasons the students gave for using the slogan. They suggested that government should provide work for graduates and that the curriculum should be more practically oriented toward skills acquisition. The implications of this study’s findings include an update of existing theories on the factors that influence students’ attitudes and beliefs about education and the need to tailor education policy, teaching methods and curriculum to meet the needs of students. This study provides empirical evidence for the slogan ‘education/school is a scam’. Further studies are needed to confirm this empirical evidence in other states in Nigeria using in-depth interviews.

Abstract We present a first time study on identifying the causes and remedies to Nigeria’s low contribution to research literature. A mixed research approach involving 300 academic staff from several areas of specialization in southern Nigeria was adopted, using structured questionnaire and semi-structured interview schedule. Data obtained were analysed using descriptive statistics and thematic technique. Furthermore, 43.7%, 28.6%, and 27.7% of the respondents were from the university, polytechnic, and the college of education system, respectively. While 78.4% of the respondents agreed that the high cost of open access publication in top journals influenced Nigeria’s low contribution to research literature, over 75% reported that the low contribution was due to high cost of attending international conferences. Other factors identified were stringent conditions for paper acceptance (89.7%), scarcity of relevant information about Africa (85.4%) and paucity of high impact journals in the libraries of Nigerian tertiary institutions (6.7%). Others were poor funding, non-usage of research findings by policymakers, lack of adequate facilities, and high penchant for publication in predatory journals, informed by promotion criteria not supportive of quality. Participants advocated for increased funding, reduced conference fees and entrenchment of collaboration between reputable publishers abroad and African publishers.

Abstract Differential item functioning (DIF) in test items has been an issue in testing. It can occur in national examinations conducted in a heterogeneous country like Nigeria. This has generated the proliferation of several methods that can be used to detect DIF items in a test. Whether these DIF methods can detect the same test items as DIF items is of much concern to measurement and evaluation experts. More so that some of these methods of detecting DIFare based on classical test theory (CTT) while others are based on item response theory(IRT). The main purpose of this study is to compare the index of DIF for a given sample under the methods of CTT and IRT for candidates with the same mathematics ability from different socio-economic statuses (SES), location and gender. Four DIF detection methods were used in this study; two of these methods were based on CTT- namely transformed item difficulty (TID) and Mantel-Haenszel (M-H); while the other two were based on IRTnamely item response theory three parameter model (IRT-3P) and Rasch model. The four DIF detection methods were used to determine the index of DIF for gender, location and SES for 2012 WASSCE mathematics objective test. The DIF indexes for these four methods were later compared to find to what extent they were able to detect the same test items as DIF items. An ex-post facto design was adopted. The population of this study consisted of all senior secondary class III students’ in public schools in Delta and Edo states. The proportionate stratified random sampling approach was used to sample out one thousand nine hundred (1900) students from the population. Twelve research questions and nine hypotheses testable at 0.05 level of significance were used and data were collected using two instruments, these are the 2012 WASSCE mathematics objective test and the socio-economic status questionnaire whose validity was ensured. The reliability of the 2012 WASSCE mathematics objective test and the socio-economic status questionnaire using test-retest method yielded 0.892 and 0.702 respectively. Data generated were analyzed using SPSS 17, BILOG-MG and WINSTEPS 3.2 packages. Descriptive statistics was used to answer the research questions while chi-square independence test and the contingency coefficient were used to test the hypotheses. The findings of the study revealed that CTT methods of detecting DIF did not agree with IRT methods of detecting DIF in the items flagged as DIF. The methods of detecting DIF within CTT did not agree in the items flagged as DIF. However, there was agreement in the methods of detecting DIF within the IRT in the items flagged as DIF. It was recommended that measurement and evaluation experts should freely use the methods of detecting DIF that are based on IRT and that seminar and workshop should be carried out to aid the proper understanding of DIF detection methods that are based on IRT.

Abstract Test theories are aimed at providing methods that will help overcome measurement problems. There are two main measurement theories used in measuring the output of the educational systems, namely classical test theory (CIT) and item response theory (IRI'). The CIT has been faulted since it yields different results when different samples of subjects front a population or different samples of items from the same pool are selected. Due to this shortcoming, the researcher applies the IRT- Rasch model on the mathematics achievement objective test (MAOT). The study was an instrumental design. Three research questions and one hypothesis were formulated to guide the study. A proportionate stratified random sampling approach was used to select 1003 students front public schools in Delta and Edo states. The instrument consists of 50 items with a reliability value of 0.73. The WINSTEPS' Rasch model software was used to establish how well the MAOTfit the Rasch model, establish the unidimensionality of the items, estimate the item difficulty indices for the items, the examinees' ability and its associated standard errors. Forty-seven items scaled through the Rasch model. Recommendations were made in this paper on why to use IRT principles of test construction in Nigeria.

Abstract The study investigated the influence of gender, school location, and socio-economic status (SES) on students’ academic achievement in mathematics. The study was an ex-post factor design in which the variables were not manipulated nor controlled. Four research questions and three hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The stratified random sampling approach was used to sample 1900 students such that the variables in the study were put into consideration. Two instruments were used for this study namely mathematics objective test (MOT) and socio-economic status questionnaire (SESQ). Experts in mathematics and measurement validated the instruments. The reliability of the MOT and SESQ using the test-retest method of establishing reliability yielded 0.71 and 0.70 respectively. The results of the study showed that students have an average achievement in mathematics. The result also showed that male students performed better than female students, urban students performed better than rural students and students of parents with high SES performed better than students of parents with low SES. One of the recommendations was that teachers should put into consideration the disparities that exist between male/female, urban/rural, and low SES/high SES when teaching mathematics.

Abstract In order to promote effective counselling in schools, the counsellor needs good records of the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domain from the teacher. This calls for a proper practice of continuous assessment in schools. This study investigated the evaluation of the practice of continuous assessment of secondary school teachers. The study was an ex-post-facto type by design. A sample of 229 teachers was purposefully selected from the public and private schools in six local government area of Delta State in Nigeria. The instrument used was a 21 items structured questionnaire. Percentage, mean, standard deviation, Z-test and one-way analysis of variance statistical tools were used to analysis the data. The findings revealed that the characteristics of continuous assessment, cumulative and systematic are well implemented but that of comprehension and-guidance/diagnostic are poorly implemented. There was a significant difference in the continuous assessment practice of public and private secondary school teachers with the later doing better than the former. Also, years of experience of teachers do not significantly influence teachers’ continuous assessment practice. It was therefore recommended that teacher’s should be exposed to more seminars and workshops on continuous assessment procedure

Abstract The Children Wellbeing Scale (CWS) is a new scale released in 2019. Modern psychometric methodologies such as the Rasch Measurement Model (RMM) have not yet been applied to it. The data set was collected from young people in two Delta State local government areas using a convenience sampling technique (n=752). The sample consists of 45.5% males and 53.5% females. There were 24.4%, 54.3%, and 21.2% children aged 9-11 years, 12-14 years, and 15-17 years. Test of fit, dimensionality, local independence, category response thresholds, item difficulty, individual ability, and reliability index are all part of the Rasch analysis and was applied in this study. Thirteen items were deleted from the scale because they did not fit into the RMM. As a result, the 11 variables with 63 items on the CWS were reduced to 10 factors with 50 items. The study's findings revealed that the CWS was unidimensional and confirmed local independence. The items' difficulty indexes were determined. There were more items with a little above average ability. The CWS's validity has been improved using the RMM. The instrument possesses characteristics appropriate for detecting and monitoring children's wellbeing in educational, health, and research settings.

Abstract This theoretical paper explores the role of theoretical perspectives in questionnaire design, aiming to improve data quality and research outcomes in social studies research. It examines the significance of questionnaire design in understanding human behaviour and decision-making, and its potential contributions to research practices. The paper examines classical theories like cognitive dissonance and contemporary models like implicit attitudes, focusing on understanding belief systems and their cognitive, social, and cultural influences. It also discusses strategies for identifying relevant dimensions of attitudes and beliefs and addressing response biases to improve data accuracy. The paper also emphasizes the linkage of theories to measurement constructs, ensuring content validity by mapping theoretical concepts to questionnaire items. Practical implications are demonstrated through item wording, scale development, and piloting. Ethical considerations, such as informed consent, anonymity, and avoiding harm, are explored to ensure participants' rights and well-being. Cultural and contextual adaptation is also highlighted, as are appropriate modes of administration to maximize response rates and data quality. This theoretical analysis provides valuable insights for psychometricians, researchers, and psychologists in constructing questionnaires that effectively capture attitudes and beliefs. By integrating theoretical perspectives, researchers can enhance the validity and reliability of their data, leading to a deeper understanding of attitudes and beliefs in various research contexts. The study also identifies future research directions and innovations in questionnaire design methodologies to continually improve attitude and belief measurement practices.

Abstract Research findings are vital to a country's progress; hence, conducting research is essential. Numerous online research resources (ORRs) are available to assist with the research process in the twenty-first century. Apps and websites that researchers can utilise to aid their research are known as online research resources. Online research resources have been known to affect the research process positively. Nevertheless, researchers in developing countries seem not to be using them. This paper explored the reasons for not using them and how to correct the errors. The population of this study comprised lecturers in tertiary institutions in three states in Nigeria. The sample consisted of 54 lecturers (48% female and 52% male). The study used a semi-structured interview technique to gather the data, which was analysed using the thematic technique. The findings indicated that the causes of low utilisation of online research resources included an inadequate demonstration of the needed skills, awareness, interest, and willingness to embrace new technologies. Others are that online research resources were not included in tertiary institutions curriculum and poor mentoring process. In addition, poor internet services, poor sensitisation, irregular electricity supply, and few experts in that area were other reasons. The remedies identified by the respondents include workshops, seminars, and training that institutions and academic associations should carry out. Creating more awareness, personal development, and productive mentorship should be addressed by academia. Others were that the online research resources should be included in the curriculum of tertiary institutions and WIFI services should be provided in all tertiary institutions. If these remedies are implemented, there will likely be an increase in the utilisation of online research resources during the research process. This study's findings have implications for Nigeria and other developing countries. Replication of this study in other developing countries will improve the validity of our findings.
